The increasing complexity and functionality of electronic equipment, particularly devices such as kiosks, information terminals, automatic ticketing and other consumer-facing equipment, has raised new challenges for industrial designers. With multi-choice menu-driven operations now prevalent, it is important that as much guidance as possible is given to the equipment user to ensure successful completion of the transaction in as short a time as possible. For many years, secret-until-lit and colour change on operation have been staple features of membrane-based interface panels, and IGT has been a leader in the sector, with many innovations to our credit.

In the recent past, capacitive, contactless switching has become very popular for two main reasons. It is a highly reliable technology, involving no moving parts and, of particular importance for public applications, the interface can be protected by a screen, up to 13mm thick, to give physical protection against accidental or malicious damage. However, until now, it has proved impossible to combine capacitive switch and selective backlighting because of conflict between the two technologies.

A partnership between IGT and Design LED Products has overcome this problem, giving industrial designers complete freedom to incorporate multi-colour backlighting into the operating keys to guide the user through the process. This patented process combines all the benefits of both technologies, opening up endless possibilities in the human-machine interface (HMI).
