Capacitive keypads can be used as stand-alone devices, integrated with other types of capacitive units or embedded in an assembly as part of an interface unit that could employ traditional membrane technology, capacitive keypad and slider areas, electro-mechanical switches, displays and other options.

Cost-saving: A single chip controller can manage up to 32 individual keys with very little additional circuitry required.

Design options: The ability to integrate the control functions into curved and complex radii surfaces gives immense creative freedom to the product designer.

Environmental protection: As the external interface is isolated from the underlying electronics, the ingress of dirt or moisture is prevented.

Security: In hostile environments such as marine applications, and public areas where vandalism is a potential hazard, the interface can be protected by mounting it below a robust substrate.

Choice of materials: Capacitive technology is compatible with most non-conductive materials, (glass, plastic, wood or ceramic), giving designers' the freedom in the presentation of a keypad.
